I’ve been playing around with different handmade typefaces in birthday cards and just for fun. The illustrated one is tedious mainly because you have to get it all right in one go, whereas the cutout type is also tiresome but is easier to redo. I’m interested in exploring these little character typefaces, which I enjoy for the pun and the possibilities.

Here is some aggressive typography:

I’m not the best at documenting my print work. Sometimes people take a video,  some take photos, some scan, and some just post the original digital files. Sometimes the photos are static and sometimes they are a variety of closeups. How do you like documenting your print work? I just redocumented some of my work again, keep reading for some samples…

I finally got around to printing the lookbook for my Natasha shoot! I printed on a gray matte cardstock and then printed on semi-gloss photo paper for the photos on top of the patterns. They’re pasted on so it has a cool raised and glossy DIY touch to it. I’m really happy with it! I glued the pages back to back and then bound it together with a printed pattern along the spine! Hope you enjoy! These are just photos from my iPhone but I’m sure I’ll document this a bit more professionally in the future!

I’ve been using my little iPhone camera every day for the last month that I’ve had it, and was interested in taking the pictures off the computer. Yesterday I designed and printed a small booklet with some of the pictures I have been posting on Instagram. This morning I folded the pages and stitched it together. I’m a little rusty on the book stitching, but I figure I’ll get better with a few more versions, maybe on some nice paper. You can find the pictures online here: http://followgram.me/mattinstafun, and here are some pictures of the book I made.

I Kettle stitched the book. And it is a quarter of a 8.5×11″ letter page. I have referenced the book seen above a lot, Bookbinding for Book Artists, especially for this project.

I made some posters for films and events at UCLA during 2010/2011. The process of illustration is always fun because there is no way around doing it by hand, as obvious as that sounds. I’m not sure that computers and touchscreens will ever replace the feeling of pen and paper. But then again, my process of design with type usually ends with most of the work being done on the computer. I’ve tried doing that by hand and the results never seem to be very good. I wonder if the computer really makes things more efficient, or if it is just making us more impatient. I don’t like that you can make something so fast.
